Winter is one of the best times to stay at Brown Dog Cabin, but it’s worth knowing what to expect before you go. The road up from Steamboat can be snow packed for most of the season, so an all wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended, and snow tires make a real difference.
Inside, the wood burning stove and full heating keep the cabin warm even when temperatures drop well below freezing outside. Cathedral ceilings and thick log walls hold heat better than you’d expect from a cabin this size.
Pack heavier than you think you need. Insulated boots, wool socks, and a real winter jacket matter more here than they might in town, especially if you plan to get outside for snowmobiling or snowshoeing. Because there’s no cell service on the property, download any maps, playlists, or entertainment before you arrive.
Snowmobile trails run right from the property through Routt National Forest, and rentals are available nearby in Clark and Steamboat if you don’t bring your own machine.
