Clark, Colorado is a small unincorporated community about 18 miles north of Steamboat Springs, and it’s where Brown Dog Cabin calls home. There’s no real downtown to speak of, just a general store, a handful of ranches, and the Elk River winding through the valley.
That’s part of the appeal. The Elk River Valley is quiet, spread out, and surrounded by public land, with the Routt National Forest and Mount Zirkel Wilderness rising up on either side. It’s the kind of place where the drive in is part of the experience, with the road following the river most of the way up from Steamboat.
The Clark Store is the closest thing to a hub in the area and a good stop for basic supplies, gas, or a quick meal. Beyond that, the valley is mostly ranchland and forest, which is exactly why guests come here in the first place. If you want a town with more going on, Steamboat is a short drive south, but if you want to disappear into the mountains for a few days, Clark is where that starts.
