Fly Fishing the Elk, Yampa, and Little Snake Rivers

The Elk River Valley is home to some of the best fly fishing in Colorado, and Brown Dog Cabin sits right in the middle of it. The Elk, Yampa, and Little Snake rivers are all within a short drive, each offering a different kind of water and a different kind of catch.

The Elk River runs just minutes from the cabin and holds a healthy population of wild cutthroat trout. It’s a smaller, more technical river, well suited to anglers who like reading water and working tight pockets along the bank.

The Yampa River, a short drive south, is wider and slower moving in most stretches, known for strong brown trout and good access points near Steamboat Springs. It’s a favorite for guests who want a classic Western fly fishing day without a long drive.

Further out, the Little Snake River offers a quieter, less crowded experience for anglers looking to get away from other traffic on the water.

Spring runoff typically clears by early June, and the fishing stays strong through fall. Whether you bring your own gear or arrange a guide out of Steamboat, a day on the water is one of the easiest ways to spend a morning while staying at the cabin.
